GrassRoots Meats, located in southern Colorado, provides all natural pasture finished beef and lamb, as well as organic free range chicken, raised without added hormones or antibiotics. Our cattle and sheep are 100% grass fed and grass finished (never any grain), and are on pasture from the day they are born to the day they are taken to the processor, a small family owned USDA plant, where they are processed in a very humane fashion. Although we only own 115 acres, we lease about 1500 acres of land in the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle, where most of our cows stay year round. We bring our yearlings to southern Colorado each year, where we lease another 1500 acres, to finish on the lush green high mountain grasses. We presently have about 130 mama cows, and the ranching operation is managed by family members (father, mother, daughter and 4 grandchildren) and one full time employee.
Inside the Farm
How is your approach to farming different than other farms in the same category?
GrassRoots Meats uses strict animal husbandry guidelines that focus on the humane treatment of animals raised in a healthy environment where they are allowed to mature naturally. We utilize pasture rotation, controlled grazing, natural fertilization, and water source management – a low energy, environmentally sound approach to raising cattle. As a result our animals yield tender, great tasting and nutritious meat.
How does your different approach contribute to a long-term profitable growth strategy for your farm and other small farms like yours?
At GrassRoots Meats we are deeply committed to producing and supplying our customers with the finest grass finished meat available today. We began direct marketing our meat in 2002 when the grass finished industry was in its infant stages, and have set the standard for excellence and sustainability in the marketplace, both in our production standards and in our marketing innovations. Our website continues to generate new customers, as well as meet the needs of our long established buyers. The flexibility of our ordering system is unrivaled in the industry.
How would you specifically use a Mortgage Lifter Lift or Mini Lift?
We would use this money to add another employee to our program. As Allan, the owner, advances in age (65 years young) it becomes increasingly difficult to keep up with all the physical demands of the ranch.
Please share why you are so passionate about your farm and/or farming in general.
Our grateful customers remind and encourage us that we really are meeting a need and helping them in their quest for wellness. And grass-finished meats definitely help with wellness. Our family seldom gets sick – an occasional cold is about all. And our customers report the same. Of course, wellness is not just about meat. Folks who purchase our meat are generally the same folks who are eating lots of fruit and vegetables, often organic or homegrown, and taking vitamins and supplements. It’s a package deal. We feel the future health of our family and our customers depends on our commitment to this program. We are in it for the long run, and hope that our children and grandchildren will continue our legacy.
