Green Dirt Farm is a 150 Acre grass based sheep dairy that creates a variety of sheep milk dairy products; including soft ripened and hard cheeses, and yogurt. We use milk from our own Animal Welfare Approved ewe flock and we also source additional sheep's milk from other nearby Animal Welfare Approved small family farms. We have 10 full time employees and a number of seasonal employees. Sarah Hoffmann runs the cheese making side of the business and her daughter Eliza runs the farm side of the business.

Inside the Farm

How is your approach to farming different than other farms in the same category?
We believe that making exceptional cheese starts, quite literally, from the ground up. Grass based dairying builds fertility in our soil and protects it from erosion. It also provides a very wholesome and natural diet for our sheep. The diverse grasses that our ewes eat create rich concentrations of aroma compounds in their milk so that it can be turned into truly exceptional cheese and yogurt.

How does your different approach contribute to a long-term profitable growth strategy for your farm and other small farms like yours?
Grass based dairying creates value because it is the foundation for a superior quality product. In addition, from a holistic perspective, our farm practices enhance the health of our entire farm ecosystem and contribute to the health of our community. In addition, our farm partners with other farmers in our community to support them in becoming grass based and Animal Welfare Approved. In this way we hope to grow to become an enduring and sustainable model of grass based dairying.

How would you specifically use a Mortgage Lifter Lift or Mini Lift?
We would use the Mortgage Lifter Lift to build an aging cave for our long aged hard cheeses. Our production of these cheeses has been limited by our lack of aging space, but we have not had the financial capacity to build additional aging space.

Please share why you are so passionate about your farm and/or farming in general.
We are passionate about the natural beauty and relationship with the natural world that is present on a small family farm, and we are equally zealous about the idea that it is possible to do dairy farming in a humane and environmentally sustainable way.
